From Group to Team
From Group to Team: J Squad plus Bill
Group Presentations 10/05/2017
This week we conducted our group presentations within our ESOC 211 class. These presentations were based off of our research and analysis of Bruce Tuckman’s Five Stages of Group Development.
Forming- This is the crucial initial stage in which members will come together as a collection of individuals. The “Forming” part comes in when these individuals begin to start thinking of themselves as a group as they proceed to establish goals.
How we did it- Our group “J-Squad plus Bill” was formed after we met in the back row of the classroom. Although it was a bit random, we soon found that we needed to accomplish the mission of completing the project on time to turn in and present to the rest of the class.
Norming- This stage is the development of rules (formal/informal) to regulate the behavior of all team members.
How we did it- We accomplished this by establishing schedules and budgeting time as well as establishing deadlines and suspenses.
Storming- During this stage is where conflict is most likely to arise. As too much is detrimental to group effort, we did our best to establish expectations very early on.
How we did it- If people could not meet, then we had to adjust our schedules in order to cover any deficiencies.
Performing- This stage occurs as the group comes together to effectively execute the goal and or mission. Groups that work well together will achieve this stage.
How we did it- We continually met at coffee shops and different collaborative workspaces around the University of Arizona campus.
Adjourning- This stage occurs when the goal has been accomplished by the team as a whole.
How we did it- We finished the project and met our deadlines. We also presented and communicated our analysis. Now we will go back to our regular seats in class until next time.
In a sense, we turned our group from a collection of individuals into a functioning team with the goal of accomplishing the completion and presentation of our group project.
