Need Some Privacy?

In our curriculum we delve into the topics of many issues of the modern condition. Many of these come from the adaptation we have had with regards to digital presence on the Internet. Privacy on the Internet is a topic of contention as it involves many government, corporate, and individual parties, all with different interests and end states. In class one of our readings Daniel Solove (known as the International Expert on Privacy) is also a law professor at George Washington University Law School. In his article for The Chronicle of Higher Education Solove explains that what we believe is private really isn’t and how it got to be this way as well as why we should care. Solove explains that government entities slide by with gross overstep of invasion of privacy under the “nothing to hide” argument. This in recent decades has become more of a reality due to the constant rise of terrorist and other attacks in modern society.
“Privacy, in other words, involves so many things that it is impossible to reduce them all to one simple idea. And we need not do so.” (Solove, 1) This means that the definition of privacy cannot be narrowed down as it encompasses many fundamental rights in a free society. It means that any one entity cannot impede on privacy because there are too many conflicting interests.

  2. I really don’t understand how some people can use that same phrase showing their carelessness for the topic. The government is one thing, but I also find it crazy that people shell out a lot of money too for products that only allow the company to make more money off of their human behavioral data. The era of paying to be a product is very alarming and their needed to be some rules put into play, or the public should demand more transparency.
