This week we were tasked to read into brand building. In particular to our learning objectives was the reading assignment “Branding in the Age of Social Media” by Douglass Holt in the Harvard Business Review. I thought this was an interesting read personally due to the fact that brand building has a tremendous impact on modern day business! With many evolving industries, many new markets have been created in the information economy. Many of these have to do with social media management and involve research and adaptation.
On the flip side, corporations are attempting to become less faceless by turning to consultants in this new era of online branding. From what I gathered from the reading, social media itself can be described as a billboard or giant playground for showing the world your own brand/product and it is an amplified system of word of mouth communication. It represents more of a cultural shift in the digital age which has stirred the pot for traditional companies/brands.
Since many people do not want to be “sold” anything, creativity in branding is very valuable when marketing to consumers. One method that has revolutionized branding is engaging the consumer head on by inviting them to participate in the marketing content itself!. Branding is now its own study in itself as it entails competitive strategy. Innovation and ingenuity with respect to studying social trends and subcultures has improved the experience for consumers as more and more companies have gotten to know their customers better.
I agree that with the many emerging markets that are occurring within our society it is important to have a firm grasp on social media management and it involves abundant amounts of research. Research is important within companies because this is what helps a company tailor their social media accounts to advertise what their particular companies want. Without conducting this research, many of these companies would not be able to complete successful media management techniques within their marketing campaign.
ReplyDeleteHey Jacob great post. I agree with you on the fact that researching before creating a subject for a purpose is a solid idea because you can know what does and doesn't work in the subject your creating or investing in. i think many people now days do the research even if it takes longer to create their product the value in the product will be higher rather then them jumping in without knowing anything.
